For the month of October we would like to focus on what is happening in our community to improve accessibility and emergency preparedness, as well as resources to help your family prepare for a natural disaster. Wildfires are a part of our reality but they are not the only emergency we have to worry about. Power outages, floods and earthquakes also have the ability to disrupt daily life and cause devastation. It\u2019s hard to think about natural disasters when everyday can feel like survival, but having a plan for our family and our pets is essential. Having a family member with disabilities may mean we need extra time to evacuate and must account for factors such as sensory issues, elopement, medications, or medical devices in our plan. Please check out the resources available below courtesy of the Camas Lions to help make a plan for your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior centers, disability advocacy groups, individuals with disabilities, and their families are being invited to share feedback as the City of Camas develops an ADA Plan guided by a new ADA Plan Advisory Committee. ADA compliance extends beyond parking spaces to include sidewalks, ramps, curbs, pedestrian signals, crosswalks and other components that allow public right of way and improve pedestrian safety. The Camas CSD Special Ed PTSO attended the second meeting with Special Education Teacher Ms. Eakins and one of her students. Feedback from as many individuals as possible is important to help improve accessibility for everyone. Within the constraints of the current budget, the city is prioritizing select streets based on feedback from the Camas Community. The last time ADA accessibility was addressed was in 2015 when the first round of improvements were made. <\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe Camas Lions are proud to announce their newest initiative, Emergency Preparedness, Response & Recovery, dedicated to strengthening community resilience in times of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a community member and advocate, I believe emergency preparedness must be inclusive of all families\u2014especially those living with disabilities. During disasters, these families often face greater risks and barriers to safety. That\u2019s why planning ahead, creating accessible support networks, and ensuring communication and mobility needs are addressed is not just important\u2014it\u2019s essential. Preparedness saves lives, and no one should be left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
